Stay socially safe

The point of social networking sites, for many is to show off the friends list. But for many people, especially young women, it’s about interacting with old friends extensively, and build new relationships selectively. Except, once you are on the networking circuit, add requests come dime a dozen. You wonder is this some guy from school I can’t recall? Or maybe a person I met at that party last week?

How do you handle such Add requests? Some women just send a blanket ‘No’ to such requests. This is an immensely safe way to handle this, and reducing the chances of bad experiences. But you could follow these tips, and end up some new good friends after all!

If someone sends you a request which makes no head or tail, do not even give it a second thought, says one careful social networker.  And if someone has a name like Sexyboy, GreekGodwithHotBod…you know this may not be good news at all! But sometimes, names can be a product of a fleeting whim for the owner, and so may mislead you altogether.

So it’s best to check out the profile thoroughly. For those who want to cover their tracks doing this, that is, do not want that person to know that you have checked his profile, you can go to the settings menu of your profile, and switch off the option that displays where you have been on the networking site. Go through the profile carefully and look for signs that could spell trouble, or have bad intentions.

See if you have any common friends, and if they turn out to be women too, you should be more careful. Instead of becoming trusting of the person who seems to know your friend, you should just delve a little more.

You might often find that all the friends in his list are all women, even women of a certain age! For instance, all college-going girls, or middle-aged housewives’ and so on. If you see only women on a guy’s friends list, would that not appear abnormal to you? Take your call to accept or not, based on this.

Then there are guys who send out fascinating bios of themselves that make them sound too good to be true, and it’s easy for anyone to accept a request from such a person. But if he was such a fascinating guy, he might not need to circulate his bio to get friends, would he! Check his profile and only if he sounds like a balanced person, should you accept the request.

And if you do manage to add on some pesky boys to your list, you can just block them when they act up! And do not forget to drop a mail to the site complaining about the person. After all, the site does have some responsibility of what goes on in their spaces. Happy and safe networking!
