Developed by the brilliant minds behind "Flow" aka Thatgamecompany, Flower is not a regular game at all; it is digital art that combines emotions, music and purpose in a singular experience that causes a Zen-like feeling.
You start as a petal in a bland, black and white world. The objective is to guide the petal using the SixAxis motion controller through a lush landscape, which as mentioned before is in black and white. As you control the petal, you can fly through other flowers, which will add more petals and form a trail. The trail will get bigger and more vibrant as you pass through more flowers, and although it may sound monotonous, it's really addictive. Please watch the video below to see the game in action.
Once you have passed through every flower in a particular area, a scripted sequence is triggered that adds some really beautiful colors to the dull landscape. The idea is to turn the entire colorless landscape to full glory by touching all the flowers. It's very simple but still really rewarding to see a dry landscape come to life, especially when it's your doing. There are many levels for you to explore and the game definitely offers a high replay value as I ended up playing the demo levels more than once.
Once you get used to the controls, you can press any button and you will get a "boost" enabling you to move around the meadow much faster. The scale of the game is quite impressive as the levels are pretty big in size, so roaming around aimlessly doesn't get old very soon. The controls are so simple that anyone can play this game. You don't have to be a gamer or a techie to be able to play this one, as your tech-hating granny can play it too and chances are that she will be addicted to it.
Let's talk about the two most impressive aspects of the game - visuals and sound. The game looks absolutely stunning as the vibrant landscape is gorgeous when viewed on an HDTV. The highly detailed grass, the beautiful trail of petals and explosion of color after completing one sequence, is beyond words. This is a game that will move you with its impeccable presentation. The simple, slow tunes playing in the background will make you feel closer to nature while you sit around lazily on your couch.
There is no competitive element to the game, no life or death, no collecting orbs for upgrading your character, nothing. This is a game that requires a good screen, a great sound system and some patience. One should play this game after a hectic day of work as it will help you relax and feel at ease. There will be many hardcore gamers who will be bored after the first 10 minutes of play, but this isn't targeted at the hardcore. This is an experience for the more simple-minded crowd, and it excels in what it promises. It's pretty unfortunate that this game will be available only to a select few (the one's with a PS3 and an active PSN wallet), but if you known someone who meets the requirements, rush to him and experience Flower.
